Weaving SLOs into Course Design: A Practical Workshop

Friday, September 27th, 2024, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Location: Phillips (Building 3) Room 3-125
Presented by: Dr. Cathy James-Springer, Director, Organizational Development and Learning

In this workshop, participants will delve into the intricacies of student learning outcomes (SLOs). We’ll explore how to extend and break down SLOs, ensuring they are seamlessly integrated into our courses. Specifically, we’ll differentiate between overall course goals, SLOs, and module outcomes. Participants will actively engage in developing module outcomes using learning taxonomies. By the end of the workshop, attendees will have practical strategies to enhance their teaching and align it with desired learning outcomes.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this module, you will be able to:

  1. Differentiate between course goals, SLOs, and module outcomes.
  2. SLOs and their significance in course design.
  3. Explore learning taxonomies and how these frameworks inform the development of learning objectives and outcomes.
  4. Apply taxonomies to create measurable, actionable objectives that enhance student learning within specific course modules.
  5. Use hands-on activities to actively develop module-specific learning outcomes.

New Faculty Orientation

Welcome New Faculty!

I want to welcome you to the 91ÖÆƬ³§Pro professional learning experience! Here at 91ÖÆƬ³§Pro where we promote faculty development and growth along with fellowship with colleagues across campus. We'd like to invite you to take advantage of our services. We have a variety of presentations every month, each semester. All of these are geared toward helping us all become better instructors and equipping us to deliver the best experiences to our students.

We will be conducting New Faculty Orientation virtually this year. There will be two parts to the Fall 2023 new faculty orientation. Part one will consist of an online orientation for faculty engagement with key leaders at our college. The second part of the orientation will be delivered on Canvas, our learning management system, through a course designed specifically for you and your colleagues. We would strongly encourage you to connect with your colleagues on the site. You will be added to the learning space after the online registration.

You should have received an invitation in Microsoft TEAMS link for part one of the orientation. If you have yet to receive the invite link, please email cle@durhamtech.edu immediately so that the invitation may be sent. The session will be recorded and available for replay on the on TEAMS. We encourage you all to attend and develop relationships with new colleagues and other faculty and staff members as we engage and commit to the work here at 91ÖÆƬ³§Pro.

I highly recommend getting your 91ÖÆƬ³§Pro user ID credentials before the orientation. These credentials are used for 91ÖÆƬ³§Pro email and logging into Canvas, our learning management system. Your direct supervisor should be able to help you through the process.

You can then go over the resources below before, during, and after the orientation at your own pace. During our live orientation, you will become acquainted with various people and departments on campus that can guide you during your teaching journey at 91ÖÆƬ³§Pro. You will also complete an asynchronous portion for the orientation in Canvas.

Take some time to review your welcome letter and orientation agenda sent in your email. Don’t forget to accept the invitation on Teams. Please don't hesitate to ask any questions about the New Faculty Orientation or any other aspect of our campus community.

Kindest Regards,
Dr. Cathy James-Springer
